PR Day 2004: Blueprints for Success in Public Relations
When the PR Day 2004 committee first began working on the event in December 2003, we had no idea how successful it would be! The morning started off with a “Masters’ Breakfast” with Jim Lukaszewski, ABC, APR, Fellow PRSA” for senior-level PR pros with 15+ years of experience in public relations. This value-added session gave practitioners the opportunity to ask those questions they’ve always wanted to ask someone of Jim Lukaszewski’s caliber… and also to hear from him the importance of becoming a strategic counselor to senior management.
PR Day 2004 opened with a general session, featuring Craig Varoga on “Strategic Messages and Marketing in Modern Presidential Campaigns.” A local political strategist and CEO of Varoga & Rice, Varoga served as National Field Director in 2004 for the Wesley Clark for President Campaign. Following Varoga’s presentation, attendees moved into breakout sessions, choosing between Myra Jolivet’s “Winning Strategies in Multi-cultural PR” and John Sturtevant’s “The Writing Workshop: Learn to Write with Clarity and Purpose.” The next round of choices for breakout sessions included Linda Wise’s “Securing Your Customer Base” and Megal Mastal’s “Message Development: Reaching Your Target Audience With the Right Message.”
Jeff Cohen, Executive Vice President and Editor of The Houston Chronicle served as keynote speaker during lunch. He discussed issues facing the Chronicle and how we, as PR professionals, can work hand-in-hand with reporters to help inform the public.
After lunch, Jim Lukaszewski, ABC, APR, Fellow PRSA, presented “Getting to the Table: How to Develop the Mind of a Strategist.” This session, which ran for close to 2 hours, ran concurrently with Donna Anderson’s “Communication Audits” and a panel discussion on the Fundamentals in PR, featuring Judi Swartz, Melissa Stevens, David Mendel, Sarah Voss-Simpson and Jeff Chastain.
The day closed out with a favorite from the days when PR Day was known as Media Day – Media Roundtables. For this general closing session, members of Houston’s working media agreed to sit down with attendees to talk about issues, the best way to secure news coverage, etc. Attending this session were representatives from the Houston Chronicle, KTRK, KHWB, the Houston Business Journal, Texas Lawyer, KTRH, KTMD, KXLN, KPRC, and KUHF.
Now that PR Day 2004 is over, the committee is hard at work on PR Day 2005, to be held on Wednesday, September 14. If you’re interested in serving on the committee, please contact Melanie Brenneman (melanie.brenneman@businesswire.com).
Thanks to our 2004 Sponsors
