Edelman Acquires Independent Powerhouse Vollmer

Edelman, the world’s largest independent public relations firm, today announced that it has signed a definitive purchase agreement to acquire Vollmer Public Relations, the largest independent PR firm based in the Southwest.   Edelman will merge Vollmer’s Austin, Dallas and New York operations into its own, and will establish Vollmer’s Houston headquarters as the hub for a new “Edelman Southwest” region serving Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico, and Kansas.  The combined entity will be home to 50 professionals and will exceed $9 million in annual revenue.

“We aspire to be the leading firm in every market in which we do business, and Vollmer’s considerable consumer marketing and corporate experience, well-known crisis management capability and stellar reputation will give us the chance to realize that aspiration in the southwestern United States,” said Richard Edelman, CEO and president, Edelman.   “We’re particularly pleased to be back in Houston, a strategic hub for energy, technology, education, healthcare and engineering that’s important to us and to our clients.  Only New York City is home to more Fortune 500 companies.“

Founded in 1981 by CEO Helen Vollmer, the Houston-based firm is known for its capabilities in travel and hospitality, healthcare, education, energy, public advocacy and issues management.  Clients include Travelocity, Sabre Holdings, Texas Tourism (Office of the Governor, Economic Development & Tourism), Comcast Houston, American Air Liquide, City of Houston, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (through Milkshake Media) and the Texas Ballet Theater.
“Our independence and long-term client partnerships have been central to our  success for nearly three decades, so we’re thrilled to be joining a firm that places a similar value on independence, and is known for its outside-the-box  thinking and high standards,” said Helen Vollmer.  “Edelman’s willingness to invest in clients and employees, and its track record for innovation – particularly in the digital space – is incredibly exciting.  It is a global company         re-imagining the business of public relations, and we can’t wait to add our expertise to the organization.”

Edelman has been in Texas for nearly thirty years, and currently supports more than two dozen clients from its Dallas and Austin offices, including the American Petroleum Institute, LIVESTRONG, Williamson-Dickie Mfg. Co., SuperMedia, R.I.M. (Research in Motion), Barnett Shale Energy Education Council, Freeman, MD Anderson Cancer Center and Boy Scouts of America National Council.

Helen Vollmer will become President of Edelman Southwest, reporting to Nancy Ruscheinski, President and Chief Operating Officer, Edelman U.S.  Edelman Texas General Manager Teresa Henderson will serve as EVP, General Manager of the combined Dallas office and will share responsibility for the combined Austin office with Vollmer’s Denisha Stevens, who also has been named EVP, Consumer Marketing for the region. Vollmer’s Carolyn Mayo has been named EVP, General Manager, Houston, and Vollmer COO Allen Caudle has been named EVP, Crisis and Issues for the region.

“By integrating Vollmer and Edelman in Texas and leveraging Edelman’s global network, we’re ideally positioned to support companies and organizations based in or doing business throughout the Southwest, and around the world,” said Nancy Ruscheinski.  “Texas is a vibrant and evolving marketplace and Edelman looks forward to benefitting from the depth of relationship and experience Vollmer has as a long-time leader in the state.”

The acquisition marks Edelman’s third for the year:  the firm acquired Significa, a leading Brazilian brand and CSR firm earlier this month, and in March acquired the Center, a public affairs firm in Brussels.
