February 1st: Here Comes the Judge - County Judge Robert Eckels

Judge Robert Eckels aka Mayor of Reliant City will speak at PRSA Houston’s February 1st luncheon meeting. He will recount the many communications challenges faced at Reliant City during the Hurricane Katrina evacuation this past summer.

As evacuees converged upon Reliant City in Houston so did the media including high profile celebrities.  Hear from Judge Eckels the strategies and resources used to manage the PR associated with this historical human event.

Harris County Judge Robert Eckels, named one of the 30 "best and brightest"  Americans by Esquire Magazine in its December 2005 edition, has been the presiding officer for the Harris County Commissioners' Court since Jan. 1995. He is the only member of the Court who represents all the citizens of the third most populous county in the United States with 3.6 million people. A conservative steward of public funds, Judge Eckels has brought various constituencies together to develop solutions on issues ranging from transportation to public health. His performance reviews have cut the number of County departments in half and produced $14 million in savings. Most recently, he and Mayor Bill White organized the largest response to a hurricane tragedy the nation has ever seen in response to Hurricane Katrina, followed two weeks later by the largest evacuation effort for Hurricane Rita ever witnessed. The response has tagged the Houston area as "the city with a heart."
