Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is well known globally as an unstoppable breast cancer organization with much of the brand’s momentum generated on the local level from its affiliates. But even strong brands can fail on the local level without strategic organization and execution.


Through consistent marketing messages, strong volunteer activation and innovative ideas, the Komen Houston Affiliate has grown from raising $34,000 in its first event to become the number one affiliate in the nation for granting the most funds to the community totaling nearly $30 million dollars in the past 20 years. Komen Houston PR Manager, Tania Cruz, and Love Advertising’s VP of PR, Jessica Manning, will share the organizational and marketing tactics used by the Affiliate to raise funds to end breast cancer forever.

Since this is PRSA Houston's Annual Meeting, the winners of the upcoming election should be announced.

PRSA Houston Member Challenge: Rock the Vote!

Now is the time to make your voice heard. Ballots for the PRSA Houston chapter 2012 Board of Directors and Assembly Delegates election were distributed to members August 18. If you haven’t voted yet, you have until Noon, Sept.6 to do so.

This election is especially important, because it also includes a measure to approve new chapter bylaws.

PRSA Houston Members Asked To Approve New Bylaws
During the upcoming PRSA Houston annual election, members will be asked to approve new bylaws for the chapter. Nationally, Leadership Assembly delegates approved new PRSA bylaws in 2009 and chapters were asked to revise their own bylaws accordingly by the end of 2011.

In keeping with that mandate, the PRSA Houston Board has reviewed the suggested chapter bylaw template, made revisions to fit our chapter’s needs and now seeks membership approval for these new bylaws. To take effect Jan. 1, 2012, the bylaws must be approved by two-thirds of those voting in the annual election, and we need a quorum of 25% of our voting members to participate in the election.


So what’s new in the bylaws?

·         The most obvious changes are that our chapter officers will be elected by the membership annually and that directors will be elected to one-year terms annually.

·         Directors will be limited to three consecutive terms. Officers other than the past president, president and president-elect will be able to succeed themselves once.

·         The offices of treasurer and secretary may be combined and held by the same person, at the discretion of the board.

·         The board will consist of president, president-elect, vice president, secretary, treasurer, past president, PRSA Leadership Assembly Delegates, seven directors-at-large, and the president of the Public Relations Foundation of Houston.

·         All board members will be required to sign a conflict of interest policy.


Things that remain the same:

·         Leadership Assembly delegates will still be required to be Accredited in Public Relations and will serve three-year terms. Successive terms are allowed.

·         Bylaw amendments require a vote of two-thirds of the present members, provided a quorum is established.


But, don’t take our word for what the proposed bylaws say. This is your chapter and you should be an informed member. You can read the proposed bylaws as well as review the old bylaws. Please make sure to ask questions, if you have them, of the current chapter officers and directors.

Oct. 1: Help Needed to Judge Cincinnati Chapter Awards


PRSA Houston is seeking volunteers to judge PRSA Cincinnati’s Blacksmith awards, which are similar to PRSA Houston’s Excalibur Awards. The judging will take place Saturday, October 1, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at FKM Public Relations office.


We need at least 20 volunteers, including 10 volunteers with APR certification.
