Risk Mitigation: Building & Maintaining Community Trust

PRSA Houston''s November Luncheon

Active opposition, community resistance, delays, and distortions are what usually greet anyone today who brings progress or change to any community. Please join us for a PRSA Houston professional development workshop on November 8, featuring Jim Lukaszewski, ABC, APR, Fellow PRSA as he discusses "Overcoming Opposition: Building Community Support" and reveals the patterns of resistance, and the mistakes and errors that trigger or enflame opposition and counteraction.

You''ll walk away with key strategies to overcome persistent bad news and community opposition, and a plan to overcome community opposition and achieve the objectives you set in the community.

Jim will also serve as keynote speaker for the PRSA Houston monthly luncheon following the workshop; the topic for the luncheon is "Becoming a Trusted Advisor."

Many thanks to the sponsors for this event: Halliburton, Fleishman-Hillard and ChemRisk. To register for the workshop and the luncheon, please visit us online at www.prsahouston.org.

PRSA Houston Supports Student Trips to International Convention

Because of the support of all its sponsors this year as well as continued membership renewals, PRSA Houston was able to give $7,200 to four different PRSSA Chapters to enable their leadership to attend the PRSA 2006 International Conference in Salt Lake City in November. The board of PRSA Houston responded to funding requests from University of Houston, Texas A&M, Sam Houston State University and the University of Texas Pan American University (Edinburg). The board weighed the requests carefully and agreed to amend the budget to invest in the additional needs of students whom we hope will be our leaders of the future.

PRSA Houston to offer Girl Scout Workshop

Sponsored by KHOU Channel 11

PRSA Houston is helping local Girl Scouts earn the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) Public Relations Interest Project Award. The interest project encourages Girl Scouts ages 11-17 to learn about the public relations profession. To earn the GSUSA Public Relations Interest Project Award, Girl Scouts are required to complete activities entitled Skill Builders where they create press kits to publicize themselves, interview public relations practitioners about their daily responsibilities and role-play pitches as a spokesperson for a favorite cause.

We need volunteers! Give back to the public relations profession and the community by volunteering for this educational and fun event! The event will allow our volunteers to apply their knowledge of public relations to the work of tomorrow''s leaders.

Find Your Best Employees at www.prsahouston.org

Whether you are adding your first employee or filling a slate of new roles, the PRSA Houston job bank is the best place to find qualified people.  After registering on the site, click on “Job Bank,” then “submit a job.”  Payment is generally with a credit card, though checks may also be mailed and invoicing is available upon request for members.

Thanks to our Volunteers

Last month, about 12 public relations professionals gave up part or all of a Saturday to judge the entries from the Georgia Chapter, which had previously judged PRSA Houston entries in the spring. Several of these professionals volunteered to take all leftover entries to their places of work to complete the judging. Our special thanks goes out to all the professionals at Pierpont Communications, The Padgett Group, Sterling Bank, GolinHarris and Marion, Montgomery, Inc. for helping with the leftover judging.

New Re-test Fee for Candidates Effective Nov. 1

The Universal Accreditation Board is introducing a re-examination fee of $200 for APR candidates who fail the computer-based examination and retake it within six months of the date of failure notification. The reduced fee is offered as an incentive for candidates to retake the examination while preparation is fresh on their minds. Candidates will be required to complete the Examination within this six-month period. With the reduced fee, UAB is recommending that those participating organizations that provide rebates pay them only the first time a candidate takes the computer-based examination. To register for re-examination with the new, reduced fee, candidates can contact Kathy Mulvihill at 212-460-1436 or kathy.mulvihill@prsa.org.
