Aug. 17-20: APR Bootcamp in Houston

Tomorrow, July 13, is the deadline to register for the APR Boot Camp that will take place in Houston, Aug. 17-20, 2011.
 
 
This four-day intensive program, brought to you by PRSA, in conjunction with PRSA Houston, will present and allow qualified candidates to prepare and take part in the Readiness Review™.

If advanced from the Readiness Review™, candidates may then take the computer-based Examination for Accreditation in Public Relations on August 20 at a local Prometric testing site.

 

The bootcamp is designed to provide a setting that will meet the needs of busy professionals whose schedules don’t permit extensive preparation time. The first three days of the Boot Camp will take place at the United Way of Greater Houston.

 

Candidate pre-requisites include:

  • Must be a PRSA member and/or a member of a Universal Accreditation Board participating organization
  • Approved application and Examination fee of $385 must be received by PRSA National
  • Must register for the Boot Camp one month in advance (required to clear Prometric examination authorization)
  • Download and complete the Readiness Review Questionnaire one month in advance of the Boot Camp

Day 2 & 3 - Computer-Based Examination Preparation   $270

Full three days                                                     $350

Are you interested in chapter, district or national leadership? Check out the Southwest District's Quick Start Conference. Quick Start is a professional development program to equip our current and future leaders for service. The event is open to all PRSA members.

 

You'll learn best practices from national and chapter leaders from across the Southwest District related to issues as motivating a team, succession planning, Accreditation, chapter programming ideas, fundraising and sponsorships, membership recruitment, and PRSA resources. Speakers will include members from throughout the District, a national representative from PRSA and a PRSA National Board member.

July 28: Meet Energy Editors at PRSA Houston's July Media Breakfast

 

With oil and gas as one of the most predominate industries in Houston, we are calling all communicators to come out and mingle with some of Houston’s top-tier energy reporters. July 28, 2011 from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at the United Way Community Resource Center.

 

Don’t miss this opportunity to build relationships and participate in a Q & A session.

Call for Speakers: PRSA Southwest District Conference

Submit proposals by August 29, 2011


The PRSA Southwest Converence will take place in Tulsa, OK, April 11-13, 2012. Conference organizers are looking for experienced presenters who can motivate and energize an audience on the latest tools, techniques, trends and knowledge of new technology or research pertaining to public relations. Presenters are need for breakout sessions of approximately 90 minutes and keynote speakers for general sessions.

Industry experts, seasoned practitioners, academics, researchers, or public relations service providers are welcome to submit a proposal to individually or jointly present a topic relevant for PR practitioners with varying levels of experience. Organizers are open to any proposal that provides PR professionals with new knowledge, insight and ideas that can enhance their professional capabilities.

 

The deadline to submit proposals is Monday, August 29, 2011. The proposal must include a title, the topic, a description of the proposed presentation (200 words maximum) and three learning objectives participants will take away from the session. Please also include a biography (100 words maximum) and a list of previous speaking engagements. Programs must offer solid and authentic tactical and strategic insights, and must NOT be a commercial for products or services. Programs that are interactive and engage the audience are encouraged.

 

Presenters will receive a travel stipend and lodging and a complimentary registration to the conference.

2011 Excalibur Award Winners
 
Congratulations to all of the 2011 Excalibur Awards for Excellence winners. See the complete list of winners.

PRSA Houston President Michelle McCormick congratulates Bob Hale, president and chief executive officer of the Houston Association of Realtors®, who was honored as CEO Communicator of the Year by the chapter.  

If you were unable to join us in June for the 2011 Excalibur Awards Gala presented by Business Wire Houston, here were some of the highlights:
 
  • LyondellBasell took home the biggest prize of the evening—the Grand Excalibur Award—for their Chemical Plant Building Implosion entry in the Issues Management category.
  • Mary Benton from KPRC Channel 2 hosted a crowd of more than 230 guests, a 36.9 percent increase over the previous year, to a program full of laughter, awards and special memories.
  • The Public Relations Foundation of Houston raised more than $5,000 to benefit its scholarship program.
  • Dr. Barbara Langham, APR received the Legacy Award.
  • Bob Hale, President and CEO, Houston Association of REALTORS©, reminded the crowd during his CEO Communicator of the Year acceptance speech about the importance of having a talented communications team.
  • PR Professional of the Year went to Brad Leone of Fifth Ring which also took home the Mid-Size Agency of the Year Award
  • For the second year in a row, the Young PR Professional of the Year was won by a Hill & Knowlton employee, Erin Dillard.
  • FKM won the most awards at the Gala and even took home two special awards for PR Agency of the Year and Large Agency of the Year. Additionally, Laureen Lucas received an honorable mention in the Young PR Professional of the Year Award.
  • The Harris County Flood Control District won the Government Relations Team of the year.
