Meet Houston Chronicle’s Jeff Cohen This Wednesday
Join PRSA Houston Wednesday, May 5 as we welcome one of Houston’s foremost leaders in journalism - Jeff Cohen - executive vice president and editor of the Houston Chronicle. How can PR pros succeed as epic changes are taking place in the news business? Cohen will address this issue and identify trends you need to know to stay ahead of the curve.
Cohen, a Wyoming native, spent his childhood in Houston and has a special interest in state and city affairs. He is a graduate of Bellaire High School and a journalism graduate of the University of Texas. Cohen began his career as a sportswriter for the San Antonio Light then made his way up the ladder as an award-winning editor of the Albany Times-Union. He joined the Houston Chronicle – the seventh largest newspaper in the U.S. – in 2002. Cohen is a pioneer in newspaper website design and management. Chron.com has won many awards.

Nominate a Colleague Today for the 2010 Excalibur Legacy Award
PRSA Houston members and guests will gather at the annual Excalibur Awards June 17 to honor outstanding professional accomplishments. We will also honor a lifetime of professional achievement with the 2010 Excalibur Legacy Award.
We are now accepting nominations for the Legacy Award, which will be awarded to someone who exemplifies the highest ideals of professional public relations practice.
Chapter members are encouraged to nominate a colleague, mentor or role model for the Legacy Award who meets the following criteria:
· Candidates should be a PRSA member and either a current or a former PRSA Houston chapter member.
· Candidates should have at least 25 years of experience in public relations.
· The award may be given posthumously.
Nominations and a brief summary highlighting why you have nominated this candidate should be submitted by Friday, May 7 to Terri Larson. Please limit the nomination to two pages.
Nominations should demonstrate the candidate's leadership and expertise in the field of public relations through:
· outstanding service to his/her company, community, organization or educational institution
· outstanding service to PRSA Houston
· honors, awards and recognition, accreditation
· advancing the body of knowledge and public image of the profession through teaching, writing, speaking, mentoring and/or PRSA volunteer/leadership positions

KUHF's Debra Fraser to Emcee Excalibur Awards Dinner June 17
PRSA Houston is pleased to announce the emcee for the 2010 Excalibur Awards for Excellence Dinner - Debra Fraser from KUHF Houston Public Radio. Ms. Fraser has been a great help supporting this year’s awards behind the scenes. We look forward to having her as our special guest at the awards dinner June 17.
Ms. Fraser is the station manager and chief operating officer of KUHF. As station manager, she oversees the combined cultural programming and news departments, as well as the station's public information, online initiatives and fundraising through corporate support and individual gifts. Ms. Fraser has been with KUHF for 22 years. PRSA Houston members may also recognize her as the former news director for KUHF and current president of the Houston Press Club.

PRSA Houston’s PR Day 2010 – a one-day workshop and expo event – is scheduled for Nov. 30 at the Hyatt Regency Downtown. This year’s theme is PRSA: Promoting Relationships and Surviving Adversity.

Join the PR Day planning committee at its next meeting Wednesday, May 12 at the United Way Resource Center at 50 Waugh Dr., from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. Your time, skills and resources are still needed to make this year’s PR Day a hit. Committee contributions include programming, logistics, communications and more.
