Director, Media and Public Relations

Responsible for positioning the United Way of Greater Houston as the best way to make the biggest difference in our community through strategic management of media and public relations activities in collaboration approach. The director, in partnership with leaders from across the organization, develops, plans and implements media and public relations strategies for the United Way to advance the brand.
This position is responsible for developing and implementing United Way’s media relations activities including writing press releases, responding to media inquiries, media training and crisis communications. This position requires self-initiative and minimal supervision while working collaboratively with a team of staff, volunteers, public relations, media and marketing professionals and all levels of United Way staff. Experience initiating contact with and responding to the media is required.
Manages the relationship with the media including developing key reporter relationships, pitching story ideas that positively position the United Way, establishing United Way as an expert in key health and human services issues, respoinding to media inquires, handling rapid responses to meda stories that could affect the UW and managing crisis communications when the need arises. Manages outside public relations firm.
Demonstrates leadership and initiative to develop and implement the UW's media and public relations strategies and plans to support the work for the organziation. Includes development and implementation of yearly media and public relations plan as well as project management for activities that arise during the year. Manges UW's outreach to specific segments of the community and the media including the Hispanic community.
Required Experience:
Minimum 5 years working in media and relations with crisis communications experience and with some general marketing/public relations experience.

This Job Requires the Following Skills:
Proven understanding of media operations and the ability to effectively interact with media representatives. Ability to work with diverse groups including volunteers, staff, vendors and agency representatives.
Knowledge of print production and photography
Knowledge of intranet and website communications
This Job Requires the Following Computer Skills:
Strong proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and related desktop and graphics packages.
Education Required:
Undergraduate degree in journalism, communications or marketing, or comparable experience
