Senior Development Writer

Job Description
SUMMARY:
Working under the supervision of the Director of Institutional Giving, the Senior Development Writer is responsible for writing proposals to foundations, corporations and individuals, tailored acknowledgment letters, and drafting, editing and proof reading all department text inculding Annual Fund appeal letters, invitation text and other miscellaneous projects. Duties also include writing correspondence on behalf of HGO’s General Director, Chief Development Officer, Director of Institutional Giving, other development staff and trustees.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
1. At the direction of the Director of Institutional Giving, prepare letters and proposals for all HGO activities, including, but not limited to: operations; endowment; campaign support; and education program funding.
2. Identify and write all gift acknowledgement letters on behalf of the General Director and Chief Development Officer ensuring letters contain appropriate language and sentiments. 3. Working with other members of the Development Department, draft all general correspondence including Annual Fund appeal letters, supporting materials, acknowledgement letters and other projects.
4. Working with the Director of HGOco, draft program descriptions for use by development officers for fundraising puposes.
5. Working with the appropriate departments within HGO prepare, draft, edit and review all development-related content for publications such as Opera Cues and Playbill.
6. Assist in the completion of special projects as assigned by the Chief Development Officer and Director of Institutional Giving.
7. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Experience:
Bachelor's Degree (Liberal Arts, Music, Business or other relevant subject) and 3 to 5 years writing experience required.

This Job Requires the Following Skills:
Working knowledge of the non-propfit environment and preferrably experience with grant writing. Excellent writing and editing skills as well as exceptional organizational skills required. Must have the ability to work within deadlines, work collaboratively with both members of the development staff and others in the company. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is necessary. Some evening and weekend work is required, particularly during each of the Opera’s three repertory periods.
