PRSA Houston Board Changes Nametag Policy

The PRSA Board has approved a policy change beginning with the October 3 luncheon. From now on, only the PRSA Houston members who have reservations should have a permanent name badge at the luncheon. All walk-ins will need to use handwritten paper nametags. Our hospitality chair, Paula Smead, has been lugging an abundance of magnet tags to every event because we have no permanent storage at any of our venues. With the growth in membership, this has become a backbreaking endeavor. So, PRSA Houston members now have two reasons to register in advance: 1)lower price and 2)permanent nametag available. Of course, we will continue to bill those who do not show nor pay for their reservations. Members can still walk-in, but they should not expect to find the magnet nametag. Plan ahead and benefit!

Each year companies and non-profits aim to be included in the Fortune Magazine 100 Best Companies to Work For list. Being selected to this elite group is one of the hottest promotional tools companies are using to attract the best workers, increase employee retention rates, and solicit new customers and shareholders. We have invited representatives of Texas Instruments, 2007 #87; EOG Resources, 2007 #83; and The Methodist Hospital System, 2007 #9; to join us for a panel discussion about what it takes to make the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For list. The process of applying and landing on this coveted list can be grueling as human resource and corporate communication professionals navigate convoluted guidelines and potential internal roadblocks. The ultimate accomplishment of completing this process is improved business practices and a more friendly work environment that helps increase employee productivity.
PRSA members author article on future of PR agencies

PRSA members Petri Darby, APR, and Dan Keeney, APR, coauthored the article, "Technology tears down barriers to create new, 'virtual' PR firms," which was published in the April 2, 2007 edition of the Houston Business Journal.

The article describes how new technologies that have empowered individual and independent PR practitioners are changing the competitive landscape for public relations agencies. Darby is the president of darbyDarnit! and Keeney is the president of DPK Public Relations.

Read the article here.

Keep reading for an excerpt:

Fueled by technologies that enable collaboration and remove geographic barriers, Houston has witnessed the emergence of a sophisticated network of independent public relations firms. Together, these professionals represent the largest collection of PR talent in Houston -- larger than even the biggest agency in Texas -- and they are challenging the region's midsize to large agencies for the lucrative client work doled out by major companies.

Is it a threat to traditional agencies? Not for those willing to change, incorporating greater flexibility in all aspects of their business. Others who insist on business as usual and ignore the growing power and value of the individual risk becoming obsolete.

The news media is relentless in its pursuit of a controversial story that attracts widespread public attention, and public opinions are quickly formed based on the initial slant of the news stories. The truth and facts are often lost in the heat of a sensational story involving a known public figure or an unfortunate individual caught in the public spotlight. If you are that public figure or individual, who do you call to protect or salvage your reputation? Meet Joe Householder, director for Public Strategies Inc.
On Friday, March 9, PRSA Houston is co-presenting a luncheon with the Texas Public Relations Association (TPRA) in conjunction with the TPRA 2007 Annual Conference, which is being held in Houston this year at the Hilton Post Oak. The luncheon will take the place of our regular luncheon meeting for March. Registration is now available online at www.tpra.com. The cost for PRSA members is $35.

Following a welcome by Houston Mayor Bill White, our featured speaker for the luncheon is Marlene McClinton, public information officer for the Houston Airport System. In summer of 2006, we woke up one morning to news that a terror plot involving airplanes and liquids had been discovered by British authorities in the nick of time. As a result of that incident, overnight the TSA changed the rules about liquids and could no longer be carried onto airplanes by the traveling public. These new rules were implemented overnight and had to be clearly communicated to the flying public the next morning.

If you have any questions about the conference, you can contact Terri Larson (terri.larson@fleishman.com), vice president of the PRSA Houston board and chair of this year's TPRA conference.
