APR - Accreditation in Public Relations

APR Accreditation is a voluntary certification program for public relations professionals, administered by the Universal Accreditation Board and the Public Relations Society of America. To become Accredited and use the APR designation, PRSA members must advance from a Readiness Review and pass a written exam. Accredited members carry the designation Accredited in Public Relations (APR), signifying a high professional level of experience and competence. New APR Testing Procedures The Universal Accreditation Board re-engineered the APR exam in 2003 after working with more than 150 Accredited public relations professionals to develop a 300-question, multiple-choice examination to replace the previous format. Before taking the written APR exam, a candidate must participate and advance from the Readiness Review where a panel of three Accredited professionals review and discuss a public relations plan and answers to a questionnaire previously submitted by the candidate. The Readiness...

A Letter from the PR Day 2005 Co-Chair

Thank goodness I dye my hair or else I might have a few extra grays on my mop top now. Planning PR Day 2005 was a thrilling experience. It was full of firsts – the first time we requested presentation proposals, the first time James Arnold, APR, Fellow PRSA presented in Houston and the first time we ever podcasted a local PRSA meeting. And my first heart attack. (Just kidding.)

PR Day 2005 was held a scant two weeks after Hurricane Katrina hit and thousands of evacuees flooded into Houston. Just about every PR pro I know was doing double duty with no lunch breaks and tons of weekend overtime. At this point, co-chair Susan Richardson and I started holding our breaths. Will anyone be able to attend?

Over 200 PR professionals attended. Take that Hurricane Katrina!

As with any group effort, PR Day 2005 would not exist if it weren’t for the spectacular committee members and college students that donated their blood, sweat, time and tears for the cause. (Although the tears were at a minimum.)

Without the cornerstone of their contributions, there would be no PR Day.

Of course, the big thank you goes to all of our generous sponsors, many of who have a long history of supporting PR Day throughout the years.

PR Day’s goal is to provide top-notch professional development. If you have any feedback at all – good or bad – please e-mail me at Melanie.Brenneman@BusinessWire.com. Your opinions and observations help us to improve every year.

Save the date: PR Day 2006 is September 20, 2006.

Sincerely,
Melanie Brenneman
2005 PRSA Excalibur Awards

Tips, Definitions & Checklist Preparation Tips Summary This summary is the single-most important component of the Excalibur entry. Judges evaluate the program on the merit of the four criteria - research, planning, execution and evaluation - that you share in your two-page summary. In addition, begin your entry by providing a brief situation analysis for your program. Use the following questions to help you prepare a strong entry: Research What prompted the research - was it in response to an existing problem or to examine a potential problem? What type of research did you use - primary, secondary, or both? Primary research involves original research, including focus groups, interviews and surveys. Secondary research involves searching existing resources for information or data related to a particular need, strategy or goal (e.g., online computer database searches, Web-based research, library searches, industry reports, and internal market analyses). How was the research...
