Cyndy Garza-Roberts ranks among the best as one of the strongest voices within the Houston Hispanic community. Her credits from the community are varied, ranging from “Superior Public Service Award” sponsored by the American Heart Association, to the Houston Hispanic Chamber’s “Media Person of the Year.” As a founder and past president of the Houston Hispanic Media Professionals, Garza has demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities and continued sensitivity to her peers in the media and the Houston community.
A native of San Antonio, she grew up with the true Hispanic and Texas spirit. A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Garza worked as news reporter for KTBC-TV (CBS) in Austin from 1977-1979. She became Public Affairs Director for KTRK-TV, (ABC) in Houston the summer of 1979 and in 1992 was promoted to Community Relations Manager. As Manager of Community Relations and the Host and Producer of “Viva Houston”, a weekly half-hour magazine program, Garza was instrumental in the development of many of KTRK-TV’s special charity programs. In February of 1995, Garza joined the staff of KXLN-TV (Univision) as an account executive. Two years later in February of 1997, she joined Centerpoint Energy (HL&P) as Senior Community Relations Specialist. Her responsibilities included developing partnerships and initiatives with community, business and political leaders, education systems representatives, and nonprofit agency representatives which would address the issues, needs, and developmental growth of various segments of the greater Houston area.
In June of 1999, Garza accepted the position of Vice President of Public Affairs, at The University of Texas-Houston, Health Science Center. She and her staff were responsible for promoting, and enhancing the image, programs, and research of The University, its faculty, students, and six schools in local and national media outlets. As deregulation entered the energy market in Houston, Garza accepted the position of Foundation President and Director of Community Relations for Reliant Energy. Ms. Garza was responsible for developing strategic public relations and media relations initiatives which continued to position the company as the leader in the energy business. She was also responsible for the administration of the corporate foundation and charitable giving.
Three years later Ms. Garza accepted the position of Director of Government Relations for the University of Houston. She was part of the team that developed and managed key legislative issues pertaining to the University’s Tier One accreditation. In 2005, H-E-B recruited Ms. Garza to serve as Director of Public Affairs-Houston Division, where she currently is responsible for the company’s public relations, community relations, media relations and governmental relations. She is also responsible for its corporate charitable giving.

Cyndy currently is a lifetime member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo where she has served as Vice Chairman of the Trail ride committee and is a member of the Latin Women’s Initiative. She has served on the Advisory Boards of the University of Texas, TX Exes – Houston Chapter, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Houston Chapter, and Talento Bilinguel de Houston. She has been the past chair of the United Way Hispanic campaign.
In her spare time she enjoys riding her horses, reading, and tending to her flower beds.
Ms. Garza-Roberts is married to 32 year veteran Houston Firefighter Thomas Roberts.
