Lights, Camera, Media Relations! A Guide to Working with the Media

 

Working with the media is an exciting, challenging job, and we are here to help you prepare for it! Join the New Professionals Committee of PRSA Houston for Lights, Camera, Media Relations! A Guide to Working with the Media to learn how to tackle media relations. Speakers include Samica Knight, reporter and anchor at KTRK-TV Channel 13; Tricia Bentley, public information officer and public outreach manager for the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences; Anita Hassan, reporter at The Houston Chronicle; and Jovanna David, director of southwest operations at DS Simon Productions, Inc. They will discuss how young professionals can build relationships with media professionals, how to craft the message, and how to prepare for an on-camera interview. Attendees will also be given the chance to deliver their own statement on camera and receive feedback from our PR professionals about their on-camera delivery.

Samica Knight is an award-winning reporter and anchor with KTRK in Houston. She comes to KTRK from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, were she was a general assignments reporter and fill-in anchor at WHP-TV. Samica Knight is an award-winning reporter and anchor with KTRK in Houston. She comes to KTRK from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, were she was a general assignments reporter and fill-in anchor at WHP-TV. Prior to working in Pennsylvania, Knight spent time at KXXV in Waco. During her stay there, she covered everything from President George W. Bush at his Crawford Ranch to high profile courts-martial cases on Fort Hood. Knight has received awards from The Associated Press and the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters. She was recognized for a story she investigated about a Pennsylvania company that took thousands of dollars from employees for health insurance that did not exist. Her investigation led to the introduction of state legislation. Knight graduated magna cum laude from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Broadcast Journalism. She is also a graduate of the UH Program for Excellence in Selling, one of the top sales training programs in the country. Knight also is an alumnus of Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and the Houston Children's Chorus.
