PRSA Houston's 28th Annual Excalibur Awards honored outstanding public relations professionals, programs and tactics. Winners were recognized at the 2013 Awards presentation and dinner, June 20, at the Junior League of Houston. Gold, Silver and Bronze Excalibur Awards were presented to talented and deserving PR professionals meeting the new judging criteria.
Ward Creative Communications was recognized with the Grand Excalibur Award, an engraved steel sword to recognize the highest professional standards to which we aspire.

Ben Wheatley, ABC, APR named Legacy Award winner!
Over the past four decades, Ben Wheatley, ABC, APR, has served as corporate communicator, PR agency executive, mentor and an energetic and dedicated leader in the Houston communications community. Throughout, he has continued to exhibit the highest standards of the public relations profession and is a role model to many. He has led the Houston chapters of both PRSA and IABC as president and is accredited by both organizations. In addition, he has been a board member of the national Counselor's Academy for PRSA. Among his many contributions, Ben has been instrumental in the development and growth of the Public Relations Foundation of Houston, PRSA Houston's Accreditation program and IABC's Entrepreneurs Strategic Interest Group.
According to 2012 President Ed Davis, III, Fifth Ring, who chaired the Legacy Award selection process, "Ben has demonstrated every quality PRSA Houston seeks in a Legacy Award winner: outstanding service to his clients; exemplary continuing leadership in the chapter; the recognition and accreditation that characterize the outstanding practitioner; and a willingness to advance the profession through his support of future professionals. He has been instrumental in helping PRSA Houston create its legacy, and we are happy to add Ben's name to the list of Legacy Award honorees."
Jim McIngvale Honored with CEO Communicator of the Year Award
In 1981, Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale and his wife Linda started Gallery Furniture with $5,000 and a dream. Mack began communicating early, and his motto of "Save You Money, TODAY!" quickly became a household name. Through this consistent message, his "do-whatever-it-takes" approach to customer service and his vast philanthropic work, Mack has not only successfully communicated his passion for selling furniture but also exibited his compassion for the Houston community and its citizens. Each year, Mack speaks at hundreds of businesses, schools and organizations. His contributions to such entities prove he is a caring business partner and a community citizen. That's why he will be honored with the CEO Communicator of the Year Award at the PRSA Houston Excalibur Awards Gala.

A silent auction benefiting the Public Relations Foundation of Houston was held in conjunction with the Excalibur Awards. The PRFH presents a $3,000 scholarship to a Houston-area public relations student each year, and these proceeds fund this scholarship.
