APR is a mark of distinction for Houston public relations professionals.

The purpose of accreditation is to unify and advance the profession by identifying those who have demonstrated broad knowledge, experience and professional judgment in the field. Strengthening the Future of Public Relations

The enduring success of the public relations profession depends on preparing bright and articulate individuals to embrace it and explore its many areas of opportunity. It is vital that new practitioners be educated about how to deal with the increasingly complex challenges served up by business and society.

Thanks for "Stepping Up" and Supporting Our Annual Silent Auction
The Houston business community and attendees at June’s Excalibur Awards program stepped up and supported the PRFH in a big way, helping us raise more than $4,200 for a great cause – PR scholarships. The PRFH annually awards one of the largest PR scholarships offered by any PRSA chapter in the U.S.

How We Promote & Develop the PR Profession

As members of the PR profession in the Houston area, we have a unique opportunity to support future practitioners studying communication disciplines right in our own community. The Public Relations Foundation of Houston (PRFH) was formed in 2001 by the Houston Chapter of PRSA. It supports the growth and development of our profession in two meaningful ways:

  • Awards scholarships to college students.
  • Provides grants and awards to educators.

The PRFH annually awards a $3,000 scholarship to an  undergraduate or graduate student studying PR/communications and is either from the Houston area or is attending Sam Houston State University, Texas A&M or the University of Houston.

Additionally, the James W. Hart Jr. Scholarship was established as an endowed fund within the PRFH. It is funded by annual contributions by Jim Hart in recognition of the Legacy Award winner. The PRFH also manages the selection process for the Ralph Frede Scholarship held in trust at the University of Houston.

2010/2011 Scholarship Application

PRFH annually awards one $3,000 ($1,500 per semester) to a college student pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in public relations or related fields.

We will post the PRFH scholarship application for the 2011/2012 academic year (August 2011 to May 2012) in early October.

The 2010/2011 recipient of the PRFH $3,000 scholarship is Ally Hugg, a graduating senior from St. Edward's University in Austin who will enter the University of Texas in the fall to pursue further studies in Public Relations and Advertising. Hugg maintained a 3.8 grade point average while at St. Edwards and served as the PRSSA chapter president.

The 2009/2010 recipient, McKenzie Watkins, is a student at Texas A&M University studying Agriculture Communications. She finished the spring semester with a perfect 4.0 grade point average and is starting graduate school coursework this summer. She is attending the Association of Leadership Educators and the National Agriculture Communicators conferences this summer and is working at the Greater Texas Foundation as a student assistant.

How the Foundation Works

Gifts to the Public Relations Foundation of Houston (PRFH) are invested through The Greater Houston Community Foundation. This fully tax-exempt public charity manages the PRFH’s funds and carries out certain administrative, accounting, and legal responsibilities.

The PRFH Board of Trustees directs the Greater Houston Community Foundation to issue scholarships and grants to qualified 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations or equivalent. Less than three percent (3%) of total contributions are used for administrative and fundraising purposes.

Members of the Foundation Board

The Foundation is governed by a Board of Trustees comprised of PRSA/ Houston officers and board members and PRSA/Houston members-at-large. Trustees are designated officers of PRSA/Houston and members who are recommended by the PRFH board and ratified by the PRSA/Houston board. Officers are elected by the PRFH board from the members-at-large.
