POSITION: Communications Intern for the American Heart Association

REPORTS TO: Director of Communications, American Heart Association 

START DATE: Immediately

It’s all part of interning at the American Heart Association---where you can grow professionally with personal fulfillment.  We currently have an excellent opportunity for a Houston Metro/Gulf Coast Communications Intern. This is a nonpaid, part-time internship position with a minimum of 15 hours per week. Monday/Wednesday availability is preferred.

Key responsibilities include providing a wide variety of skilled communications support to ensure that the highest quality of service is provided to all media, customers, staff and volunteers; assisting with the media relations and logistical coordination of the Houston and Gulf Coast area Heart Walks,  Heart Balls, Go Red for Women Campaigns, Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Awards and related events, maintaining/updating media database, tracking media impressions and creating flyers and collateral material.

RESPONSIBILITIES include (but are not limited to):

  • Work closely with the American Heart Association Directors of Communications in the Houston Division and Gulf Coast Region to promote, plan and publicize the Houston Gulf Coast Heart Walks, the Paul “Bear Bryant” Coach of the Year Awards, National Wear Red Day, Heart Balls and Galas, and the Go Red for Women campaigns.
  • Provide onsite support for events as needed.
  • Draft and distribute articles and other press materials.
  • Assist with development of social media editorial calendars.
  • Monitor mentions of the Houston Gulf Coast market social media accounts while identifying mutually beneficial relationships.
  • Interact with local media, pitch stories and secure media attention as directed.
  • Assist with the development and design of marketing and support materials.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • College junior or senior seeking degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or Journalism preferred.

  • Prior experience with event planning, event execution, and customer service preferred.

  • Self motivated, organized, and detail oriented.

  • Ability to meet balance multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and the demonstrated ability to work with diverse individuals and groups.

  • Knowledge of AP style. 

  • Experienced in using Microsoft Office.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Internship is located in Houston at the American Heart Association offices.

Education Required

This is an entry-level internship for students in their junior or senior year of college. Students studying Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations or Advertising strongly encouraged to apply. Graduate students are also accepted.
