BikeHouston is seeking a Communications Manager to manage the organization’s supporter databases and technology needs, as well as lead communications. The position oversees the 24,000-supporter organization’s website, print publications, e-newsletters, event materials, software needs, and more. This position also oversees online media/press and works with all staff to create a clear identity for the BikeHouston brand, as well as promoting BikeHouston rides, events, membership, and advocacy efforts.

About BikeHouston

BikeHouston, the only 501(c)(3) bicycle advocacy nonprofit organization for the 4th largest city in the United States, is 1,000 members and 4-staff strong. We serve bicycle riders of all ages and abilities throughout the Greater Houston Area. Our mission is to transform Houston by creating safe streets through improved education, enforcement, and street design. Our signature programs and events include the 44-year old BikeHouston Moonlight Ramble and the BikeHouston Ambassador Program. We are also a co-sponsor of the Houston Bike Plan (houstonbikeplan.org).

This position organizes BikeHouston’s internal systems of member, supporter, and contact management as well as writes, designs, and manages email and social media communications. This includes data entry, correspondence with our service providers, and responding to social media and email inquiries. The Communications Manager produces all print and online materials for external and internal communication. The Communications Manager works collaboratively with all staff to ensure clear, consistent branding and communication.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Communications Manager leads BikeHouston’s technology and communications team and may also play a role in producing graphics such as bike maps, event flyers, and more. This position oversees the 24,000-supporter organization’s website, print publications, e-newsletters, event materials, software needs, graphic design, etc. This position also oversees online media/press and works with all staff to create a clear look and feel for the BikeHouston brand, as well as promoting BikeHouston rides, events, and membership.

The Communications Manager is one of four staff and occasionally supervises interns and volunteers. As a significant part of a small but growing staff, he/she tracks tech and communication expenditures and makes recommendations on what is needed to continue our organization growth and further our mission. The Communications Manager also works with the BikeHouston team to develop strategies and plans to use marketing materials, publications, and technology to meet organizational goals.

QUALIFICATIONS

Position Requirements:

  • BA/BS in communications, graphic design, marketing, journalism or related field. Master’s degree preferred, but not required. An architecture or urban planning degree/experience is valued as well.
  • 2-4 years minimum of relevant work experience in graphic design, communications, systems management, and/or marketing (internships count). A combination of urban planning, graphic design, and marketing/communications is ideal.
  • People and project management experience.
  • Familiarity with digital photography and videography.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently
  • Must be able to follow through on assignments and meet deadlines, have attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects at once in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to give and receive feedback.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as events and project deadlines dictate.
  • Must be willing to work as part of a team, strive for excellence, be solution-driven and have a passion for efficient system management, communications, and for bicycle advocacy and planning.

Desired Qualifications/Experience:

  • MailChimp, Constant Contact, or other email marketing software expertise
  • Experience in Membership-driven CRM databases
  • Experience in Contact Management Systems
  • Proficiency in Google Apps and Microsoft Office
  • Experience using SurveyMonkey, Eventbrite, BikeReg, and/or similar
  • Competency in Adobe Illustrator and other graphic design software
  • Understanding of print production and preparing files for printing
  • Knowledge of GIS software a plus
  • Knowledge of nonprofit structure and inner-workings a plus
  • Knowledge of urban design and the planning process a plus
  • Fluency in Spanish, Vietnamese, and/or other languages
